My Joy At Being Awarded Post Grad Cert in Autism

I’m thrilled to share the news of being awarded the Post Graduate Certificate in Autism by Sheffield Hallam University!

It is a real achievement. And I feel like it’s a really good testament to my dedication and passion for understanding and supporting neurodivergent individuals in my work as a healthcare professional working to improve mental health outcomes.

Dr. Luke Beardon (a prominent author and leading expert in the field of autism) designed and delivered the course. Dr. Beardon seeks to empower both autistic individuals and those who work with them, and his course demonstrates that, wonderfully, because it provides invaluable insights and strategies for understanding and supporting autism in a neuroaffirming way. I think that by introducing his approach into academia, Dr. Beardon opened up new pathways for acceptance, equity, and inclusion, for autistic people.

The course presents the social model and the medical model explanations of autism in various ways and asks you to explore and examine them. Having access to the University library log-in has been great for me because I was able to gorge myself on academic materials and find up-to-date research.

As you know, I am autistic myself. There is always something more to learn, isn’t there? Going through this course has equipped me with an even deeper understanding of autism that I gained due to relating all of the theories presented in the course and aligning it with my current knowledge of autistic people, and to the theories of counseling and psychotherapy that I know and use. It means that in developing my professional expertise further and applying it in real life, in the therapy sessions that I do with clients, that I meet the needs of individual autistic people even better.

This Post Graduate Certificate, not only validates my knowledge and professional expertise in autism, but it genuinely fills me with immense joy and fulfillment. I have already invested my new knowledge into my work with clients and I’m noticing that there is even more that i can understand, explain and share with clients. Which means that there are even more ways that clients can understand themselves and get their own needs met and move towards a better life. And that is what it is all about.
