Adult Aspergers & Autism Coaching or Counselling
Who is this for?
This is for adults who have Autism or Asperger's syndrome (Aspergers syndrome is an old name that isnt really used anymore, but some people may have known about themselves by using that framework and that is okay).
You do not need to have a formal diagnosis to see me, but you may have one.
Why does having a therapist who understands Autism Spectrum Disorders matter?
Differences in sensory processing can be behind many of the things that are presented in therapy (for example delayed reactions, or unexpected reactions that you have, or reactions and responses that you show that end up causing you problems). Having a therapist that knows how to identify this is important because then the right things are addressed and the route that is taken in therapy is useful and relevant to solving things in your situations.
Additionally, given that ASD is seen 'officially' as a disorder of communication, it's very common for people with autism to feel like they haven't been understood or that they are not explaining themselves effectively to the other person. This can happen in the therapy sessions as well as out in the wider world and can be very frustrating and upsetting for clients (who will begin to feel like therapy is a waste of time). Having a therapist that can see behind this, and take the time and strategies that are needed to enable the clients actual meaning to be conveyed in a way that truly matches their experience, is crucial for the client to be understood by the therapist. The therapy can be then really helpful once important elements of the situations that the client is grappling with are understood, instead of the therapist then thinking that it is something else that is the important issue.
And finally, I'd like to say a little something about emotional responses in the therapy sessions. A therapist that understands autism will understand the clients emotional responses, which may be small or huge responses. Also, a knowledgeable therapist can and understand the times that the clients are overwhelmed, or become unable to speak, and those therapists do not misinterpret what is going on.
